The University of Canterbury is inviting applications for PhD studentship for a project on developing time equivalence formulae for the design of structures in fire conditions. The collaborative project is fully funded (fee + stipend) by BRANZ from the New Zealand Building Research Levy. The minimum requirement for the candidate is a first degree in engineering, but ideally a Masters degree in an engineering discipline. The candidate must meet the English language requirements for entry into the University.

Eligibility: The minimum requirement for the candidate is a first degree in engineering, but ideally a Masters degree in an engineering discipline. Preference will be given to students who have completed a previous qualification in fire science or fire engineering. The candidate must meet the English language requirements for entry into the University.

Scholarship Description: Applicants are invited for a doctoral research project on developing time equivalence formulae for the design of structures in fire conditions at the University of Canterbury. This project is part of a fully-funded initiative to develop design principles to limit fire spread in buildings. The fire engineering group at the University of Canterbury is one of the leading organisations carrying out research into fire science and engineering in Australasia and is the only university in New Zealand to offer qualifications in fire engineering. We have two fully equipped laboratories and access to specialised high performance computational facilities. We also have close links with other research organisations, industry and the New Zealand Fire Service. The time-equivalence formula has aided the growth of performance-based design by allowing realistic compartment fire parameters to be incorporated into the estimation of post-flashover fire severity. Its attempt to relate real fires to equivalent standard fires has allowed easy provision of fire resistance for compartments. As sophistication has grown in performance-based design, the disadvantages of the simple approach are becoming more apparent. The new research seeks to more clearly define appropriate use of time-equivalence formula within the regulatory framework now in place in New Zealand and to develop alternative design approaches supported by new experimental data obtained from compartment fire testing.
